A question be posed to ye, Oppo:
At some point while sitting idle 'neath a grove of trees for nigh on one half of a year, the ABS relay in my Audi decided this life is no longer worth living. This relay is only $28. I live in South Carolina where it snows maybe one to two days every couple of years, yet I spent many years inhabiting climes where large amounts of snow and ice were the norm and learned to drive accordingly.
I decided to leave the relay as it is, unhook the warning bulb and just focus on getting better at threshold braking, since my Prelude was born ABS-deficient anyway and I'd become accustomed to not having the system, albiet with notably skinnier tires versus the Audi.
So, the question posed: When the ABS stops working on one's car and the environment is such as to not make such a system necessary, is it or is it not Jalop to just leave the ABS off and instead choose to better one's own braking prowess unassisted?

$28=replace the part. You never know what it might mess with in the system.

Both.
It'd be most Jalop to not, and just as Jalop to do.
That said, I favor the not of it all. I've owned and operated vehicles without ABS and managed to avoid dying, thus; I contend that a lack of ABS behooves the better driver.
And having said all that, if you fuck up and have a crash, don't let anyone find out that you're driving around without ABS in an ABS-equipped car, because that'll probably nuke your coverage.

Nothing. His brake controller will be a bit confused, sure, but unless he's driving something really damn recent, it shouldn't fuck with any of his other control/driving systems.
Wait, do we know what Desu drives? I don't.

The Noble M600 has no ABS.
Jalop.

Agreed. It is not "Jalop" to disable safety features in your car, at any price.

Hmmm...you might be right. It is on the same circuit as the heated seats. And the glove compartment light. I'm not sure I could live safely without those things...

An Audi, but yeah ABS kinda sucks. However, what if a friend or family drives it? Are they used to no ABS? And for $28 just replace the damn thing.

ABS light on the dash/information center just being annoying?

It was. I took out the bulb, lol. I'm sort of relieved, as I don't have to press the "ABS off" button now every time I want to have fun on an unpaved road, lol.

You have a button for this?!?!?
![]() 10/11/2013 at 22:35 |

Lol, yup.
Also, pressing the button to lock the rear diff turned the ABS off too.

There are arguments on both sides.
That said, it's only twenty eight bucks.

Leave it off. ABS is for modern Wusses.

"ABS is for modern Wusses." and brake fluid is for wusses too. Better to use water as it's free.

Jalop to remove when in a safe location to practice said braking. Jalop to leave it in for day to day driving. Un-Jalop to remove and think that you can outperform it or even come close to matching it because lets face it most of us =/= race driver.

Let me add one addendum: The ABS system in 20-something year old Audi's was pretty awful. It doesn't so much pulse the brakes as remove 80% of the braking pressure and greatly extend the stopping distance.
![]() 10/12/2013 at 07:32 |

In that case, Jalop to remove completely. Function is more important than feel good ideals.

Ok. I'll readily assert that the braking feels more confident without the ABS, which is a little weird, I guess...

In Canada, a lot of cars dont have abs.

Never thought about water. Hell, that would probably work, eh? :)

I'm beginning to like Canada more and more...

It is not mandatory, and probably never will be.

Apparently hot water and dish soap has worked as brake fluid for a while, but don't even try it.

Better yet, straight 50 wt. oil would be even better.

Oil contamination blows all the seals, quickly. The soap trick does actually work, but should actually never be done. NEVER.
